Tip for Headspins – Sitting Still

We talk a lot about headspins and headspinning at the Generation BBOY studio for two reasons. First, we love this power move. Second, we sell the world’s best headspin beanies. So, during our talks, we have gained a lot of insight on how to headspin, and wanted to teach one very important rule to get the consistent headspin floats.

“Sit still!”

Sit Still – is pretty straight forward. Most folks never get headspins down well because they constantly kick their legs all over the place. You have to find your balance!

What does it mean to sit still?

Do this NOW. Stand up. Spread your feet out a little wider then shoulder distance with toes pointed a little outwards. Now lift your arms out in front of you like a zombie and sit down in an imaginary chair. Keeping your knees in front is the key to this sit position. This is the basic position for a headspin float that most people never get down. That is, they don’t sit their butt back far enough and it’s hard to balance without this position.

Now, get your Generation BBOY headspin beanie on and do a headstand  for as long as you can in the previous position. Don’t spin, just practice your balance in this position. Try changing the position of your arms to all different ways, while still holding the sit position. If you can already do this, then move on to practicing hitting this position during your headspins.

Keep your heels in front and keep them from dropping behind you. Once most beginners start practicing tapping and spinning and, once they pick up speed, they predictably drop their feet behind their hips. This causes them to lose balance and goes back to that powerful tip, Sit Still!

By practicing the headstand before a headspin, you will also be learning how to “Sit Still, Knees in Front, and Heals Up.” Follow these rules and you’ll improve your current headspin 1,000-fold.

Now practice, because only by DOING  it will you actually accomplish anything. Talk is cheap!
